Pluralistic Seed System Development: A Path to Seed Security?

چکیده
Seed security is central to crop production for smallholder farmers in developing countries, but it remains understudied relation long-term seed sector development. Here, we compare systems two districts of Central Ethiopia characterized by subsistence-oriented teff cultivation and commercially oriented wheat relate this the country’s pluralistic system development strategy (PSSDS). Our analysis based on quantitative qualitative information from a household survey focus group discussions with farmers, as well document review key informant interviews actors that make up study sites. Farmers both used range sources primarily obtained their seeds informal sources. Evidence insecurity was found districts, apparent discrepancies between what say they prefer those actually use, limited availability improved varieties especially certified these, challenges quality some sources, differentiated access preferred according sex, age wealth. We find interventions prioritized PSSDS address most dysfunctions identified, implementation lags, particularly system, which largely neglected government programs. The intermediate shows promise, while improvements have been made formal vested political, organizational, economic interests within institutions represent major obstacles must be overcome achieve truly integrative inclusive

متن کاملImprinting and seed development.
Imprinted genes are expressed predominantly from one allele in a parent-of-origin–specific manner. The endosperm, a seed tissue that mediates the transfer of nutrients from the maternal parent to the embryo, is an important site of imprinting in flowering plants. Imprinted genes have been identified in maize and Arabidopsis thaliana, but crosses in a variety of species suggest that the effect o...
متن کاملSeed orchards in development.
This paper reviews the role of seed orchards as output systems for genetic improvement programs. In this paper, technological changes since the 1950s are examined, with emphasis on recent developments. The need to equate the type of seed orchard to the type of forestry practiced is recognized, as is the significance of the relationship between seed orchards and other output systems for genetica...
متن کاملUpdate on Legume Seed Development Using Genomics to Study Legume Seed Development
Seeds are essential for flowering plant reproduction because they protect, nourish, and contain the developing embryo that represents the next sporophytic generation. In addition, seeds contain energy resources that sustain the young sporophyte during germination before photosynthesis begins. In legumes, food reserves stored in embryonic cotyledons make seeds important as a food source for both...
متن کاملWheat and barley seed system in Syria: farmers, varietal perceptions, seed sources and seed management
A total of 206 wheat and 200 barley farmers were interviewed in northeastern Syria to understand farmer perceptions and practice relating to modern varieties, seed sources and seed quality. Wheat farmers had better awareness and grew modern varieties (87%), applied fertilizers (99.5%), herbicides (93%), seed treatment (90%) or insecticides (41%). In contrast barley growers had low awareness (36...
